people like us/positive function of the undeserving poor.

We live in a society where there are those who are poor, rich and those in between. Some people thing just because they have money and get everything they want in life it means their better than those who can't afford it.

In the video people like us, it was a very interesting video i have watched. Its starts off by talking about how class is based on looks, money, and how popular. there are many different kind of classes in society. The  video talks about "Social Climber" which are those who( the rich) talks about what kind of car they would drive and what they think is undesirable.

The video then goes on to ask a question as if you are a "Bud" or "Bordeaux", the choice you make reveal your class. one the things that was mention in the video that caught my attention was that it went on to say that having money means having the freedom to create your own lifestyle as long as you fit in with the taste of your social class.

the video shows if you have money you will be able to go anywhere and meet all kind of famous people.

It also give examples about how people want to fit into a new class just so they can feel welcome. How you were brought up shows how you will act as you get older.

The article positive function of the undeserving poor was very interesting compare to the video people like us it talks about the underclass in society. It talks about poverty at the beginning, and well all know that it is a big issue in our society. it talks about how poverty not only have a negative effect on poor but the non-poor as well. it gives an  example that street crime which deviate from important norms claimed to be mainstream. all this can have an outcome because of failing to work, having children in adolescence and out of wedlock, and being dependent on welfare.

the article discuss 13 specific function of the various beneficiaries undeserving.
1.risk reduction-takes place at a micro-social level
2.scapegoating and displacement- faulting poor can support the desire for revenge and punishment.
3.economic banishment and the reserve army of labor- people who have been label as undeserving can be banished from formal labor markets
4. supplying illegal goods-sales of illegal drugs
5-job creation- creating jobs by the undeserving poor
6-moral legitimation
7-norm reinforcement
8-supplying popular culture villains
9-institutional scapegoating
10-conservative power shifting
11-spatial purification
12-reproduction
13-extermination

those are the 13 important function of the undeserving poor. i think reading these function will help you understand them better,

  1. I like how Gans explained the there were two types of functions in poverty,..negative and positive. We as a society have to broaden our point of views and start looking at the worlds point of view. There are so many reason for why we are in the classes we're in. We just need to be more understanding and considerate of others.

  2. really nice summary man. the video was kind of ridiculous how certain things just worked in your favor. poverty definitely hurts alot more then it helps. also, good example with the woman who dressed up to get into high society.

  3. Hello, yes I agree that some indeed feel they are better than others because they have more money, material possession and or assets. We live in a fraudulent society that enforces these types of behaviors, not to say that people should be shunned because they have money and or the means either. I feel there are many down to earth good hearted/natured people that have money. There are good and bad in every social class as well as good and bad in every culture/nationality . However I feel its fair to say this inequality does exists. From a sociological perspective the findings are very accurate, this is what we live and are a part of on a daily basis and will be within our life course.

  4. I agree with you when you say when you have money, it can bring you anywhere. In all reality, it's very true but then again money can't buy you happiness. Your not going to be 75 years old still trying to drive your new ferrari. It's crazy how money can make you the class you want to be when really there's no class at all to me. There's people who's wealthy, there's people who's maintaining plus more, there's those who maintain and those who can't maintain because their mindset isn't on go. It's one of those four. No class and no categories. It's you go and get it or you don't. The world still spins.
